Writers and what they get up to
Writers have multiple lives. By which I mean, we have to fuel our addiction. And I don’t just mean by earning money, though the prospect of making any kind of a living solely from writing is lamentably remote. I mean, writing is of necessity a lonesome pastime, and there’s so much more to a human being than the pen.
I work for a unique and visionary charity called the Royal Literary Fund that strives to fund a writer in their hour of greatest need. But also recognises the creative interspace that exists between the writer, their multiple skills, and the workplace, community and world of education.
We’ve discovered that the world needs writers, not just because literature in all its forms fuels our thinking, emotions and sheer zest for life, but because everybody needs a voice, spoken and written.
